#                     an analysis of Solaris 10 packages

#               SUNWCuser on SunBlade 1500 (701 packages total)

#   This document represents the first step taken in hardening a SunBlade 1500
# intended for use as a desktop system: Inventorying each installed package
# with the goal of identifying which packages are (1) necessary, (2) desirable
# or (3) (safely) removable.
#   The SunBlade in question came preloaded with Solaris 8 and 9. Since it was
# desired to run Solaris 10, the system was shut down and rebooted from a
# Solaris 10 3/05 (generic) disc, selecting the "End User" package cluster
# (SUNWCuser) and the North American environment. 701 packages were installed.
#   The first attempt at analyzing these packages was simply examining the
# output from pkginfo. This was, however, merely a list of packages sorted
# alphabetically by name; not useful for inventorying by function.
#   Consulting /var/sadm/system/admin/.clustertoc was somewhat more useful, in
# that the metacluster listing for SUNWCuser grouped 453 (64.6%) of the 701
# packages into 73 package clusters, each presumably grouped by function.
# However, that still left 248 unclustered packages to deal with. Worse, there
# was no exact correlation with the packages listed under .clustertoc and with
# those installed: Some packages listed for installation were not installed,
# and some packages were installed that were not listed (primarily those
# involved with locale; logic in the install tool dynamically adds packages
# according to the user's specified geographic location). Finally, the
# clusters and packages appear to be listed in installation order according
# to package dependencies, with little obvious correlation to function.
#   The final approach taken was to sort each package individually into a
# category best describing its primary function. The first part of this
# exercise was to determine a package's varous functions. Documentation,
# however, was for the most part limited to the terse description given in the
# 'long' pkginfo listing, which description in most cases was merely a
# restatement of the package name, in many cases was quite obtuse, and in some
# cases was inaccurate or misleading. Accordingly, most packages required some
# research (primarily looking at the /var/sadm/install/contents database) to
# determine their intended function(s). The second part of this exercise was
# then to identify a primary function for categorization; a subjective task,
# as many packages span functional categories.
#   In what follows, the package descriptions have in general been altered
# with these goals in mind: (1) better correspondence with primary function,
# (2) consistency in substance and style, and (3) good fit in an 80-column
# page. Errors were likely introduced in some cases during this process, such
# as misinterpreting a package's functions, inaccurate revisions of package
# descriptions, or inappropriate categorization. Corrections and comments to
