The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come.
'Mr.Harmsworth,' I said in a week voice.
'Don't interrupt,' he said.
Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!

1. nervous:（因为正在发生的事）精神紧张的
   worried:（事前）担心的，紧张的
   upset: （事后）不安的

2. afford: v. 负担得起
   afford sth. : I can afford the chair.
   afford (时间）: I can afford the holiday.
   afford (money) : I can afford 5 yuan.
   afford ＋ to do : I can afford to buy it.

3. interrupt: v. 插话，打断 -> n. interruption
   disturb: 打扰某人
   interrupt: 打断某人的话 Sorry to interrupt you.

4. 间接引语
   • 主从一致：主句和从句时态一致

   主句	从句
   一般现在时	任意时态
   一般过去时	相应的过去时态

   • 人称变化
   • 只要属于宾语从句，引导词that可以省略

5. look down: 俯视；向下看；用目光慑服某人；看跌
   look up: 仰望；查阅；尊敬；拜访

6. so + adj./adv. It's so good.
   such + n. It's such large salaries.

7. It's my turn. 轮到我了（口语）
   My turn has come. （书）

8. in a loud/low voice: 音量（大小）
   in a week voice: （心里不踏实）
   in a strong voice: (有底气）理直气壮
